MHASC has been an effective force for change in the last ten years partly due to it’s large network of supporters. Organizational support can range in it’s involvement in the group’s activities but may include: participating in lobby days and legislative efforts, writing letters of support, or being involved in the coalition’s organizational planning. If you or your organization is interested in joining the coalition, please contact Jennifer Parish at email@example.com.
Join a Committee
The Family Committee is made up of individuals who’s loved ones are either currently or formerly incarcerated and is an essential to MHASC’s advocacy efforts. The Family Committee is invovled in legislative advocacy as well as training development and outreach. Recently, the MHASC Family Committee has started giving presentations to OMH staff to build awareness and sensitivity around the experince of having a family member who is incarcerated.
The Speaker’s Bureau is a developing group made up of formerly incarcerated individuals who are willing to share their experiences of incarceration and mental health treatment during incarceration. This group is working to develop presentations that will eventually be integrated into DOCCS annual trainings. This is an important step in educating corrections staff in the expereince of mental illness and how to treat individuals with dignity and respect.
